Flowers are fickle!

Here's the thing... you may have always wanted peonies as the central flower in your wedding bouquet, but if you're getting married in January, you're going to be disappointed! Brides- and grooms-to-be often don't realize that flowers are seasonal.

So make sure you're either flexible with your choice of flowers, or if your flowers are the most important feature of your wedding, setting the date will be based on the flowers you choose. We suggest you figure out your style, colour theme and style of flowers you envisage. You can then work with the florist to create arrangements and bouquets that accent this theme.

Flowers by season

Spring

  • Special spring flowers include Delphinium, Larkspur, Peonies, Viburnum, Heather, Genista, Waxflower and Queen Anne's Lace
  • Some flowers have particularly strong scents in spring - Freesia, Gardenias, Hyacinth, Lilac, Lily, Narcissus, Lily of the Valley and some Rose varieties
  • Spring represents new life, so bulb flowers, like Tulips, Irises, Daffodils and Ranunculus, are often incorporated into wedding arrangements
  • Other spring flowers include: Amaryllis, Anemones, Babies Breath, Bluebell, Calla Lily, Carnations, Daffodils, Day Lily, Delphinium, Forget-me-nots, Foxglove, Iris, Orchid, Pansy Primrose
  • Summer

  • Lilies (Asiatic Lilies) and Calla Lillies (white, yellow and pink)
  • Roses are available all year round, but there are heaps more variety in summer
  • Gerbera
  • Specialty summer flowers include Snapdragons, Sweet Pea and Hydrangea
  • Although expensive, Bouvardia and Stephanotis are beautifully fragrant
  • Other summer flowers include: Anemone, Aster, Babies Breath, Bachelor Buttons, Canterbury Bells, Carnations, Chrysanthemum, Cornflower, Daisies, Day Lily, Delphinium, Gladioli, Honeysuckle, Jasmine, Lavender, Iris, Lily, Peony, Poppy, Roses, Sunflower, Straw Flowers, Zephyr Lily
  • Late Summer/Early Autumn

  • Chyrsanthemums, Asters and Dahlias
  • Mums are most plentiful in fall
  • Sunflowers
  • Specialty fall flowers include Birds of Paradise, Pincushion Protea, Several Orchid varieties, Amarathus, Celosia, Gloriosa (or Glory Lily) and Zinnia
  • Other plentiful autumn flowers include: Amaryllis, Babies Breath, Calla Lily, Carnations, Dahlia, Gerbera, Heather, Hydrangea, Lily, Michelmas Daisy, Orchid, Passionflower, Roses, Violet, Zephyr Lily
  • Winter

  • Tropical flowers - Anthurium ('Flamingo Flower'), Cymbidium and Dendrobium Orchids are ideal for winter
  • Amaryllis and oriental lilies
  • White flowers include Agapanthus, Euphorbia, Tuberose and Ornithogalum
  • Berries - Hypericum, Pepperberry and Holly Branches
  • Other plentiful winter flowers and foliage include: Amaryllis, Arum Lily, Babies Breath, Carnations, Chinese Lantern, Christmas Rose, Chrysanthemum, Crocus, Cyclamen, Heather, Holly, Ivy, Roses, Snowdrop, Tulips, Winter Pansy
