How risky is it to order my dress online?

I want a beautiful dress (who doesn't), but I can't afford to pay off the rack prices. What are the risks/advantages with online made-to-measure dresses?

How risky is it to order my dress online?

You have a range of options when it comes to choosing your wedding dress. While you may think that online made-to-measure dresses are the most affordable option, you can often find gowns off the rack that are in fact comparable prices - especially when sale time comes around.

It's a tricky thing, that 'Internet dress'...before you choose your gown online, take note of the gowns you like and head out to some boutiques, as often times these shops will stock dress brands that can be ordered over the Internet.

The biggest gamble is the fact that a dress you see online may look great on the model, but when it arrives at your door, it may be all wrong on you. That's why it's so important to first go out and try on dresses, so you at least know that the style you have chosen will fit your body shape, complexion and style. Trust me - it'll be worth the $40 or so dollars for dress fittings to know you aren't going to look like a marshmallow or have bits you don't want on display.

If you are going to go down the Internet route, here are a few pros and cons to consider:

PROS

*    Affordability - While it's not always the case, dresses purchased online may be less expensive, once the boutique retail mark-up is taken out of the equation etc.
*    Peace and Quiet - While we do suggest you visit a boutique or two to find the style that suits you, that could be the last of the visits...meaning you can avoid busy shops and lots of salespeople.
*    Ease - It is the easiest way to shop - sitting in front of a computer and clicking a few buttons.
*    Fittings Free - You won't have to deal with having to fit in fitting after fitting.

CONS
*    Surprise - You may never actually get the chance to see the real dress up close and personal until its finished and the credit card is charged. This is always a gamble, as it may not be what you wanted when it arrives at your door.
*    Fabric - The dress may look good on screen, but what about when it arrives and it feels like sandpaper, is pure white instead of natural white, and the beads are hanging by a thread? Make sure the fabric and any embellishments are described in detail.
*    The Post - While normally reliable, it's always a risk when you put your dress in the hands of a courier, postman or customs!
*    Weight - You have to be very cautious about your size, as once you submit your measurements, that's it! If your weight fluctuates from the time at which you ordered the dress, you risk having to spend more money on alterations.

I hope that helps! One last suggestion - make sure your measurements are completely accurate - we suggest you go to a professional tailor or dressmaker to have them done. It's better to be safe than sorry!
