When should the reception start?

We are getting married in July 2010 - starting with a church ceremony followed by a reception. Can you give me an idea of timings? The ceremony itself will last for about 35 minutes. I am not sure what time to start, as I want to have photos afterwards, but I don't want everyone to be at the reception too early.

I'm sure we can work out this formula for you!

One thing to keep in mind is that it is going to be cold in July - no matter where you are in New Zealand - so let's not keep the guests standing around shivering in their wedding best!

Let's say, for planning's sake, that your ceremony is scheduled for 4pm. If the formal portion is going to be 35 minutes or so, allow for at least an hour, as weddings very rarely start on time. You'll then have 10-15 minutes of hugs and kisses, before you take off for your photo session.

You should therefore expect to head off for the shoot at around 5pm. The length of time for photographs is up to you - but it's fairly common to allow for an hour to an hour and a half.

So I would suggest you invite your guests to your reception from 6pm. The key is to have a cocktail hour - or half hour. Your guests can mingle with a drink and maybe a few canapés, which will give you a buffer if your photos take a bit longer than planned. As long as they have a snack and a cocktail, they should be fine!

So...2 hours from the beginning of the ceremony to the start of the reception should work well. I hope that helps!
